Herbal Medicine

medicinal herbs in the gardenHerbal Medicine is a safe, natural and highly effective form of treatment for health problems in both adults and children.
Although often described as an alternative treatment or a complementary therapy, Herbal medicine is actually the most widely practiced form of medicine today, with over 80% of the world’s population relying on herbs for health.

It is often noted that a significant proportion of orthodox western medicines were originally derived from herbal medicines, actually over 25% of pharmaceutical drugs prescribed by GP's today are plant based!

The main differences between orthodox and herbal medicine is that orthodox medicine chemically reconstructs single elements within a plant, either by being individually extracted, or synthesised unnaturally in a laboratory.

Herbalists however, continue to adhere to the philosophy that the synergy of the whole plant, 'as nature intended', is more effective than any one of it's isolated constituents. The active component of the plant is balanced by these other constituents, which actually support the beneficial action and reduce any negative side effects.

All pharmaceutical drugs are only symptomatic, i.e. only treat symptoms  rather that treating the cause of the disease which every patient has experienced at some time in their life. Herbal medicine given time will get to the root cause of the problem which will lead not only to the elimination of symptoms but to the cure of the disease it's self.

Therefore, herbal medicines rarely produce unwanted side effects that can be caused by orthodox medicines, additionally in most cases herbal medicine can also work alongside orthodox medicines in a supportive role aswell,
also minimizing the harsh side effects that far to often accompany pharmaceuticals.

Today, the modern western medical herbalist combines the knowledge and wisdom gained from the traditional use of herbs, along with the latest scientific research to provide well-balanced, safe, effective healthcare and treatment for the patient.

We treat the cause not the symptoms.

Experienced medical herbalist Charles Powell, is trained in the same diagnostic skills as orthodox doctors or your GP,
However, he takes a much more holistic approach to illness and disease, treating the whole person with the intention of addressing the underlying causes of the problem.

The aim is to find the underlying cause of the illness in order to identify and treat it rather than just the symptoms alone. This is because orthodox treatment and suppression of the symptoms via some isolated chemical extracts or
synthetic pharmaceutical drugs, does little more than to ease discomfort temporarily.

Where as Charles will search for the underlying cause in order to rid the body of the illness or disease it's self, through the use of carefully prescribed herbal medicines and may also include additional dietary and lifestyle changes depending on the patient.

As well as being a qualified Medical Herbalist (BSc Hons), Charles can provide invaluable knowledge through his training in Diet and Nutrition which is explicably linked to general health and wellbeing. Charles also studied Allergy Testing at the Institute of Allergy and Environmental Medicine and can also offer Alergy Testing for foods and chemicals if required.
